York, Maine

Settled in 1624, York originally called Agamenticus an Abenaki name for York River.  York became a pivotal trading center from wharfes and warehouses. Agricultural goods and lumber were traded for molasses and sugar.  York became a fashionable summer resort. You will find distinctive examples of Gilded Age architecture espcially shingle stlye.
